Outline the components of chronic pain
Red block represents persistent pain. Spikes of breakthrough pain (over various times of the day). Possible to take analgesic before doing activity which causes pain (able to apply to those with background chronic pain)

Describe how to obtain information about severity of pain
Patient gives subjective descriptions which can be converted into objective pain scores (used as an indication is a treatment is having a therapeutic effect e.g. pain score decreases)

What are the advantages of using the Wong-Baker FACES pain rating scale?
Can be used when patient is unable to describe pain using words. Useful for cases with language barrier. Suitable for children. Can be converted to numeric score

Bottom (non-opioids, paracetamol, NSAIDs, COXIBs)m middle (weak opioids, codeine, dihydrocodeine, tramadol), top (strong opioids, morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, diamorphine, pethidine, buprenorphine)

Why is it important to stick with the doses stated in the BNF for codeine and dihydrocodeine?
Has a ceiling effect

Can a patient with a history of GI bleed use NSAIDs?
Yes - if they are also taking a PPI to reduce irritation of GI

Yes - can increase levels of methotrexate by causing vasoconstriction in the kidneys and restrict excretion of methotrexate
