What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is soundwaves with a frequency higher than the upper limit of human hearing. So Ultrasound is at least 20,000 Hz
1 of 14
What is the special characteristic of ultrasound waves?
Ultrasound is partially reflected at the boundary between 2 different densities.
2 of 14
What 2 things determine how much a wave is transmitted and how much is reflected?
The medium wave is travelling through & The wavelength of the waves
3 of 14
How can we calculate the distance between boundaries?
If you know the speed of the Ultrasound & time taken for ultrasound pulse to leave probe & bounce off kidney & to be detected by the probe-then use the distance formula
4 of 14
How is ultrasound used in Medicine?
Ultrasound Imaging
5 of 14
Explain how this works?
If you know the speed of ultrasound in the different tissues, you can calculate the distance to the different boundaries. The reflections are processed by a computer to produce an image
6 of 14
Give some examples of Ultrasound Imaging
Ultrasound imaging can be used to form an image of a developing foetus or to examine soft tissues and organs like kidneys, liver and bladder
7 of 14
How does Ultrasound work in terms of a pregnant woman?
The ultrasound waves are partially reflected at boundaries between different tissues-between muscles in woman's stomach & fluid in her womb and between the fluid & foetus' skin
8 of 14
Is ultrasound imaging completely safe?Why?
So far-Yes. This is because it doesn't cause mutations and doesn't increase risk of cancer
9 of 14
Ultrasound Scanning only works for what type of organs/tissues?
Organs/Tissues that aren't surrounded by bone
10 of 14
How is Ultrasound used in Industry?
In Industrial imaging-to detect hidden defects/flaws in objects like pipes or materials like wood or metal
11 of 14
How does industrial imaging work?
Ultrasound waves entering a material will usually be reflected by the far side of the material. So, if there's a flaw like a crack in the object, the wave is reflected sooner-so you can find out whether it's damaged or not
12 of 14
What is Sonar?
Sonar is a technique used by boats & submarines to find out the distance to the seabed or to locate objects in deep water.
13 of 14
What do you need to know in order to calculate distances using sonar?
The speed of the ultrasound wave
