What does a dust precipitator do?
Removes harmful particles from the chimneys of factories and power stations that pollute the atmosphere
1 of 10
How does a dust precipitator remove harmful particles?
A metal grid/wires, is placed in the chimney and given a large charge from a high voltage supply, plates inside the chimney are earthed and gain opposite charge to the grid, dust particles become charge with the same charge as the grid.
2 of 10
What happens to the dust particles after they become charged?
The dust particles are repelled away from the wires and are attracted to the oppositely charged plates and stick to them
3 of 10
What does the dust do to the plates?
The charges on the dust particles induces a charge on the metal plate
4 of 10
How does the dust get taken away?
At intervals of which the plates are vibrated and the dust falls down to a collector
5 of 10
How is static electricity used in paint spraying?
The spray gun gets charged so all particles have the same charge which makes the paint particles spread out as charges repel. The object to be painted is given an opposite charge to the paint, the paint is attracted to the object as oppo chargs attra
6 of 10
What happens if the object to be painted isn't charged?
The object becomes charged from the paint, gaining the same charge. Further paint droplets are repelled away from the object
7 of 10
What is defibrillation?
A procedure to restore a regular heart rhythm by delivering an electric shock through the chest wall to the heart
8 of 10
What happens during the process of defibrillation?
Two paddles are charged from a high voltage supply, they are placed firmly on the patient's chest to ensure good electrical contact, an electric charge is passed through the patient to make their heart contract, care is taken to make no electric shoc
9 of 10
How can the power of the defibrillator be calculated by?
power = energy / time
