?
What are x-rays used for?
CT scans and destroy tumors.
1 of 19
What are ultrasounds used for?
Diagnosis, e.g. baby scans and treatment, e.g. shatter kidney stones.
2 of 19
What is refractive index?
A measure of how much a substance can refract a light.
3 of 19
What does a converging lens do?
Focuses parallel rays to a point called the principle focus.
4 of 19
What does a diverging lens do?
Makes parallel rays spread out as if they came from a principal focus point.
5 of 19
How is a real image formed?
By a converging lens if the object is further away than the principle focus point.
6 of 19
How is a virtual image formed?
By a diverging and converging lens if the object is nearer the lens than the principle focus point.
7 of 19
Where is light focused?
Onto the retina by the cornea and eye lens.
8 of 19
What is a moment?
A measure of the turning effect of the force on an object.
9 of 19
What is the centre of mass?
The point where it's mass can be thought to be concentrated.
10 of 19
What is equilibrium?
When the centre of mass is directly beneath the point of suspension.
11 of 19
How can the stability of an object be increased?
By making the base as wide as possible and centre of mass as low as possible.
12 of 19
Why will an object topple over?
If the line of action of it's weight is outside it's base.
13 of 19
What is an electromagnet?
A coil of insulated wire wrapped around an iron core.
14 of 19
What are electromagnets used in?
Scrapyard cranes, circuit breakers, electric bells and relays.
15 of 19
What is a transformer?
Two coils of insulated wire, wound around the same iron core.
16 of 19
What are transformers used in?
The National Grid.
