P3 - Energy On the Move

?
What is the formula for kinetic energy?
kinetic energy = 1/2 mass x velocity^2
1 of 11
What does the kinetic energy change into when a car stops?
Into heat in the brakes, tyres and road
2 of 11
What can this be shown by?
work done by brakes = loss in kinetic energy
3 of 11
What formula shows the change in kinetic energy?
braking force x braking distance = loss in kinetic energy
4 of 11
What happens to the braking distance and the kinetic energy when the speed of the car doubles?
They quadruple
5 of 11
What are factors that affect the amount of fuel consumption?
The amount of energy required to increase its kinetic energy, the amount of energy required for it to do work against friction, its speed, how it is driven like excessive accel or decel, road conditions
6 of 11
What are electric cars?
Battery driven or solar powered cars
7 of 11
What are disadvantages of electric cars?
Battery takes up a lot of room, limited range before recharging, expensive to buy but cost of recharging is low, solar-powered rely on the sun and need backup batteries
8 of 11
What is an advantage of battery driven cars?
Battery driven cars do not pollute the local environment, however their batteries need to be recharged from a power station which causes acid rain
9 of 11
What is an advantage of solar-powered cars?
Do not produce any carbon dioxide emissions
10 of 11
What is a Biofuel?
Fuel derived from a living matter which may reduce carbon dioxide emissions but this is not certain as it needs deforestation which increases carbon dioxide levels
