P2 - Unit 2

?
What is resultant force?
A single force that has the same effect as all the forces acting on an object.
1 of 19
What is used to improve car safety?
Seat belts, air bags, impact bars and crumple zones.
2 of 19
What is alternating current (A/C)?
Current that is repeatedly reversing it's direction.
3 of 19
What colour is the earth wire?
Green and yellow,
4 of 19
What colour is the neutral wire?
Blue.
5 of 19
What colour is the live wire?
Brown.
6 of 19
What is a fuse?
Contains a thin wire that melts if too much current passes through it - cutting off the current.
7 of 19
What is a circuit breaker?
An electromagnet switch that 'trips' and cuts off the current if too much current passes through.
8 of 19
What is a residual current circuit breaker?
If the live wire current is different to the current in the neutral wire it cuts off the current.
9 of 19
What is radioactive decay?
When an unstable nuclei of a radioactive substance tries to become stable by emitting radiation and turn into other elements.
10 of 19
What is alpha radiation stopped by?
Paper or a few centimetres of air.
11 of 19
What is beta radiation stopped by?
Thin metal or a metre of air.
12 of 19
What is gamma radiation stopped by?
Thick lead and has an unlimited range in air.
13 of 19
What is nuclear fission?
The splitting of the nucleus into 2 equal fragments, and the release of 2 or 3 neutrons.
14 of 19
What is nuclear fusion?
The process of forcing 2 nuclei close enough together they form a single, larger nucleus.
15 of 19
What is an example common fissionable isotopes?
Uranium-235 and Plutonium-239
16 of 19
What is a protostar?
Gas and dust cloud in space that can go on to form a star.
17 of 19
How is a neutron star (black hole) formed?
A high mass star -> protostar -> main sequence star -> red supergiant -> supernova -> neutron star if mass is high enough.
18 of 19
How is a black dwarf formed?
A low mass star -> protostar -> main sequence star -> red giant -> white dwarf -> black dwarf.
