P2.5 Mains Electricity

?
Alternating Current
Electric current in a circuit that repeatedly reverses its direction
1 of 7
Direct Current
Electric current in a circuit that is in one direction only
2 of 7
What is the mains frequency in the UK
50Hz
3 of 7
Why is the live wire dangerous?
Its voltage repeatedly changes from + to - and back every cycle. It reaches over 300V in each direction.
4 of 7
Time base control
An oscilloscope control used to space the waveform out horizontally
5 of 7
What is the voltage of the mains?
230V

Why is the top pin longer in a plug?
The earth pin on a plug is longer than the live and neutral pins. This means the earth pin is the first to connect and the last to disconnect. This means the metal case will be 'earthed' when you plug it in. This stops the metal case becoming 'live'.
