What does momentum have?
Size and direction.

One of the forces must be negative and the other one must be positive.

Zero as they are at rest.

What is the momentum after the explosion?
Zero, as even though they have moved they have cancelled each other out.

Firing a bullet from a gun. the bullet goes one way and the gun recoils in the other.
