Why does the temperature not change during melting or boiling?
This is because the energy is being used to break intermolecular forces as substances change state - the temperature does not increase or decrease as the energy is not being used for that purpose.
1 of 6
What is the difference between heat and temperature?
Heat is a measure of energy, measured on an absolute scale of Joules. Temperature is measure of the average kinetic energy per particle, in degrees Celsius, on an arbitrary scale, sometimes Kelvin or degrees Celsius.
2 of 6
What does the amount of energy to raise the temperature of an object depend on?
It depends on the mass of the object, the material it is made from and the change in temperature required.
3 of 6
What is the specific latent heat of an object and what does it depend on?
The specific latent heat is how much energy is required to melt or boil 1kg substance (the SLH of an object being different for its melting and boiling points); it depends on the material and its state.
4 of 6
Why does the rate of heating or cooling depend upon the temperature difference between an object and its surroundings?
The greater the temperature difference, the greater the rate of cooling or heating, since the object will try to reach ambient room temperature as soon as possible.
5 of 6
What is specific heat capacity?
Specific heat capacity is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of a material by 1°C.
