what does the national grid do
takes electrical energy from power stations to where it's needed in homes/industry
1 of 18
what does it enable
power to be generated anywhere on the grid, and then be supplied anywhere else on the grid
2 of 18
what do you need to transmit large amounts of power
either a high voltage or a high current
3 of 18
what's the problem with high current
you lose lots of energy through heat in the cables
4 of 18
what's it much cheaper to do
boost the voltage up really high (400,000V) and keep the current really low
5 of 18
what does this require
transformers and big pylons with huge insulators (but is still cheaper)
6 of 18
what do the transformers have to do
step voltage up at one end, for efficient transmission, then bring it back down to safe, usable levels at the other end
7 of 18
how is the voltage increased
stepped up using a step-up transformer
8 of 18
how is the voltage reduced
stepped down at the consumer end using a step-down transformer
9 of 18
what are the two ways to transmit electricity
underground cables or overhead power lines
10 of 18
advantages of overhead cables
lower setup cost, faults easy to access, easy to set up, minimal disturbance to land
11 of 18
disadvantages of overhead cables
lots of maintenance, looks ugly, affected by weather, less reliable
12 of 18
advantages of underground
minimal maintenance, better look (hidden), not affected by weather, more reliable
13 of 18
disadvantages of underground
higher set up cost, faults hard to access, hard to set up, lots disturbance to land
14 of 18
what does the national grid need to do
generate and direct all the energy that the country needs, and our demands keep increasing
15 of 18
how will increased demands in the future be met
energy supplied to national grid will have to increase, or the energy demands of consumers will need to decrease
16 of 18
how can supply be increased in the future
opening more power plants, or increasing their power output, or both
17 of 18
how can demand be reduced
consumers using more energy-efficient appliances and being more careful to not waste energy in the home
