What Is Temperature Measured In?
Degrees Celsius/Fahrenheit
1 of 19
What Is Heat Energy Measured In?
Joules
2 of 19
Temperature Is...
How hot or cold something is.
3 of 19
Heat Is...
The thermal energy something contains. Depends on temperature and mass of object.
4 of 19
What Is Specific Heat Capacity?
The amount of energy needed to to raise 1 Kg of mass by 1 degree.
5 of 19
What I Specific Latent Heat?
The energy needed to change the state of 1 Kg of a substance without a change in temperature.
6 of 19
Specific Heat Capacity Equation
Energy Needed = Mass (Kg) x SHC x Temperature Change
7 of 19
Specific Latent Heat Equation
Energy Needed = Mass (Kg) x SLH
8 of 19
What Is Conduction?
Hot particles vibrate and hit each other passing the vibrations on. Eventually the particles are vibrating throughout the material.
9 of 19
What Is Convection?
Particles near the heat source move apart as their bonds become weaker. The liquid becomes less dense and so rises. Colder (denser) liquid sinks down to take its place.
10 of 19
What Does Cavity Wall Insulation Prevent Heat Loss By?
Prevents heat loss via convection and conduction in the wall cavities.
11 of 19
What Is I.R Radiation?
Part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Can travel through a vacuum. All objects emit I.R Radiation.
12 of 19
What Do Insulation Blocks Prevent Heat Loss By?
Prevents heat loss by radiation.
13 of 19
How Do Insulation Blocks Work?
They are covered in shiny foil. Energy from the sun is reflected back outside (cool in summer) and energy is reflected back inside (warm in winter).
14 of 19
What Does Double Glazing Prevent Heat Loss By?
Reduces heat transfer through conduction.
15 of 19
How Does Double Glazing Work?
The gap between the two pieces of glass contain a vacuum so it is impossible to transfer energy by conduction.
16 of 19
What Is The Payback Equation?
Payback: Initial Cost / Annual Saving
17 of 19
What Is The Efficiency Equation?
Efficiency = Useful Energy Output x 100 / Total Energy Input
18 of 19
How Can Energy Transformations Be Shown By?
Sankey Diagrams
