P1

?
What is energy measured in?
Joules (J)
1 of 17
Can energy appear or dissappear?
No. When anything happens, energy is transferred from one place to another.
2 of 17
What type of surfaces are the best at absorbing infrared radiation?
Black matt surfaces
3 of 17
What type of surfaces are the best at reflecting infrared radiation?
Shiny light coloured surfaces
4 of 17
Do hotter surfaces emit radiation faster or slower than cooler surfaces?
Faster
5 of 17
Do cooler surfaces emit radiation faster or slower than hotter surfaces?
Slower
6 of 17
What happens if infrared radiation is emitted faster than it is absorbed?
The object cools down
7 of 17
What happens if infrared radiation is absorbed faster than it is absorbed?
The object warms up
8 of 17
What happens (in terms of particles) when something melts?
When the solid is heated, particles vibrate more vigorously, bonds between particles break and reform so particles can change places.
9 of 17
What happens (in terms of particles) when something boils?
The particles break their bonds and can move around randomly.
10 of 17
Describe the particles in a solid.
In solids, particles vibrate and are held together by strong bonds.
11 of 17
Describe the particles in a liquid.
In liquids, particles move around each other but cannot escape due to weak bonds.
12 of 17
Describe the particles in a gas.
In gases, particles move randomly as the bonds are very weak.
13 of 17
Why are metals good conductors?
Electrons in metas are free to move rapidly from hotter to cooler regions, transferring energy.
14 of 17
Describe conduction.
If one end of a solid is heated, particles vibrate more and shake their neighbours. Conduction transfers energy from one particle to another through the solid
15 of 17
Describe convection.
If one part of a liquid or gas is warmed, the particles vibrate more taking up more space. The warm region of gas or liquid expands, becoming less dense and rising above cooler denser regions.
16 of 17
What do convection currents do?
They spread heat through liquids or gases that are heated from the base, or cooled from the top.
