Who is Shelley criticising in the poem?
King George III as he hated the conflict. In the poem he criticises the British monarchy, however, doesn't want to do this openly so he appears to criticise the Pharaoh.

An Egyptian Pharaoh, he led many battles to extend boarders in Egypt so is comparable to King George III

What is the structure of Ozymandias?
Mixture of a Petrarchan and Shakespearean sonnet. The form shows that a new type of sonnet replaces the old (P replaces S) this shows how new power would replace the old.

Why is the use of a sonnet important?
typically a love poem, this shows that Shelley is trying to convey how the ruler King George III (and others) are obsessed with themselves.

Detachment from the story told- shows that the story has been passed down but not the power as well as trying to disconnect himself from the criticism he's going to make to the Monarchy

'Half sunk, a shattered visage lies'
Negative language repeated to show that the intention is not praise.

'wrinkled lip, sneer of cold command'
Repetition of hard 'C' sound reflects hard nature of Ozymandias.

Alliteration emphasises emptiness.

'The lone and level sands stretch far away'
The desert outlives the statue- 'level' could suggest level headed rulers out outlive those of arrogance and war.
