5 of 44
Describe how the experiment with phosphorus and oxygen was carried out.
Heated a glass rod on a bunsen flame. Touch the phosphorus with the rod which ignites it. Replace the bung.
6 of 44
What observations are seen when phosphorus burns in air?
A bright white flame. White smoke is seen and the water rises.
7 of 44
Why does the water rise when the phosphorus burns air and by how much?
The water rises to replace the volume of oxygen that was reacted. The water rises by about 1/5 because that is the percentage of oxygen in the air.

22 of 44
Give two properties for carbon dioxide.
Colourless, odourless gas and is denser than air.
23 of 44
How is carbon dioxide prepared in a laboratory?
It is prepared by the reaction of hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate.
24 of 44
What apparatus is used in the preparation of carbon dioxide?
Conical flask, dropping funnel, hydrochloric acid, calcium carbonate, delivery tube, trough, gas jar.
25 of 44
Write a word equation for the preparation of carbon dioxide.

27 of 44
Describe the chemical test for carbon dioxide.
Bubble limewater (Calcium hydroxide) through the carbon dioxide. If carbon dioxide is present the limewater will turn cloudy. If excess limewater is bubbled through it will turn back to clear as calcium hydrocarbonate forms which is soluble.
28 of 44
Write the chemical equation fo when limewater is bubbled through and turns cloudy.
Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(g) = CaCO3(s) + H2O(l)
29 of 44
Write the word equation for when excess limewater is bubbled through carbon dioxide.
CaCO3(s) + H2O(l) + CO2(g) = Ca(H2CO3)2(aq)
30 of 44
What happens when metal carbonates are heated?
They decompose and produce Carbon dioxide and a metal oxide.
31 of 44
What happens when copper carbonate is heated?
It produces carbon dioxide and copper oxide.
32 of 44
State the observations seen when copper carbonate is heated.
The green solid turns into a balck solid. The mass decreases as the carbon dioxide gas is lost to the air.

CuCO3(s) = CuO(s) + CO2(g)
34 of 44
What is carbon dioxide used for and why?
Carbon dioxide can be used for fizzy drinks as it dissolves in water under pressure. It can also be used in fire extinguishers as it is denser than air so it sinks into the flames and prevents oxygen from reaching the fire.
35 of 44

Hydrogen is produced when a metal reacts with an acid. It also produces a salt.
36 of 44
What is acid rain?
It is when carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide dissolve in water to produce carbonic acid and sulphurous acid.
37 of 44
How is acid rain dangerous to the environment?
It lowers the pH in water and soil so that the trees planted in the soil and the fish in the water die.
38 of 44
What is the chemical test for hydrogen?
Place a lit splint in the hydrogen. If hydrogen is present a squeaky pop will be heard.
