Follicular phase: Primordial follicle
Primary oocyte + follicle cells in clusters called egg nests. Activated by FSH+LH. Several each month but only one matures for ovulation

Primary follicle formation
Follicular cells enlarge + divide (are now granulosa cells). Glycoprotein layer forms between granulosa and oocyte. Layer of stromal cells form to produce oestrogens

Secondary follicles
Separates into 2 layers: theca follicular and antrium. Antrium: follicular fluid from granulosa accumulated in pockets. Inner layer of granulosa becomes corona radiata

Tertiary (Graafian) follicle
8-10 days = single secondary oocyte. Rising LH triggers oocyte to complete meiosis 1 but stops at metaphase 2. Inner and outer follicle layers are separated by fluid, corona radiata forms a protective later around oocyte.

Ovulation
Rupture of follicular wall + ejection of contents. Fimbrae move oocyte to uterine tube. END OF F. PHASE. meiosis 2 cont if fertilisation occurs, forms ovum + 2nd polar body

Luteal phase
LH stimulates formation of corpus luteum formed by granulosa cells when empty tertiary follicle collapses and blood vessels rupture. Manufactures progesterone

If fertilisation does not occur...
Corpus luteum degenerates and disintegrates, progesterone and oestrogen levels fall
