Osmosis

?
what membrane does osmosis need? why does osmosis and diffusion not need enery ?
osmosis needs a partially permeable membrane. partially permable membrane lets though small molecules like water but stops larger molecules.is passive so does not need energy.osmosis is a type of diffusion but only the movement of water molecules.
1 of 9
what is osmosis?why does osmosis happen?
osmosis is the movement of water from a dilute concentration to a concentrated solution. osmosis happens because of random movement of molecules.if molecules bump into walls they will bounce back unless small enough to fit through hole in membrane.
2 of 9
how do plants use osmosis?how does the dilution of solution matter?
water enters root hair cells by osmosis. more dilute solution more water there is, so greater chance of water molecules bumping into hole and passing through membraneinto more concentrated solution.
3 of 9
do animal cells use osmosis?what happens to cells in concentrated solution?
animal cells burst if the concentration is diluter than the cytoplasm because to much water enters cell by osmosis.Cells shrink if place in concentrated solutionbecause water leaves by osmosis.
4 of 9
why do plant cells not burst in dilute concentration?how can we predict how water will move
Cell wall, water moves into cell by osmosis and cell membrane pushes against cell wall.if we know concentration of on either side of the membrane we can predict the water will always flow towards the more concentrated solution.
5 of 9
what are sport drinks?what do they contain?
isotonic, this means they are the same concentration as blood should be. They contain sucrose to replace that used in respiration, and water and ions to replace that lost in sweat.
6 of 9
what happens to an animal cell in a concentrated solution?
when a anail cell is placed in a solution more concentrated than the cytoplasm water leaves cell by osmosis and cell shrinks.
7 of 9
what happens whaen a cell is placed in a more concentrated solution compared with the cytoplasm?
water moves out of the cell by osmosis cell membrane pushes away from cell wall.
8 of 9
what does the plant cell wall do ?
prevenets cell from bursting in dilute solutions, therefore plants like potatoes can demonstrate osmosis.stops plant collapsing if they dont have enough water, if the cell membrane is pulled away from cell wall its strong enough to maintain its shape
