Water Potential
The tendency for water to move (kPa). Water moves from an area of high water potential to an area of low water potential

Solute Potential
The measure of how easily water molecules move out of a solution. Solutes reduce the water potential so a high solute concentration = a more negative solute potential

Pressure Potential
Only occurs in cells with cell walls. Is the measure of the pressure exerted by water entering the cell

Hypotonic (plants)
When the water potential outside the cell is higher than inside causing water to flow in. Cells become turgid, providing support

Hypertonic (plants)
When the water potential outside the cell is lower than inside causing water to flow out. Cells become flaccid or plasmolysed

Plasmolysis
The retraction of the cytoplasm and cell membrane from the cell wall of cells in a hypertonic solution

Isotonic
When the water potential is the same inside and outside the cell. There's no movement of water.

Incipient Plasmolysis
Where the cell membrane and cytoplasm are partially retracted from the cell wall. Pressure potential=0

Hypotonic (animal)
Water potential outside the cell is higher than inside causing water to move in. Cells burst (haemolysis)

Hypertonic (animal)
Water potential outside the cell is lower than inside the cell causing water to flow out. Cells shrink (crenation)
