Osmosis
The diffusion of water through a partially permeable membrane from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution
1 of 15
Partially permeable membrane
a barrier that permits the passage of some substances but not others; it allows the passage of solvent molecules but not some of the larger solute molecules (an example is the cell membrane)
2 of 15
Flaccid
a plant cell that is limp
3 of 15
Turgid
a plant cell fully inflated with water
4 of 15
Plasmolysed
a plant cell that has lost water, causing the cell membrane to pull away from the inside of the cell wall
5 of 15
Crenation
shrinking an animal cell by osmosis
6 of 15
Lysis
bursting an animal cell by osmosis
7 of 15
Visking tubing
an artificial partially permeable membrane
8 of 15
Turgor
the pressure of the swollen cell contents against the cell wall when the external solution is more dilute than the cell sap of the vacuole
9 of 15
Polar molecule
a molecule that has a partially positive and a partially negative charge
10 of 15
Hypertonic
a solution with a higher concentration of solute (dissolved substance) and a lower water potential than some another solution
11 of 15
Isotonic
when two solutions have the same concentration of solute across a semipermeable membrane. This state allows for the free movement of water across the membrane without changing the concentration of solutes on either side
12 of 15
Hypotonic
a solution that has a lower concentration of solute (dissolved substance) and a higher water potential than another solution
13 of 15
Water potential
a measure of the tendency of water molecules to move from one place to another
14 of 15
Reverse osmosis
the process by which the liquid solvent moves across the semi-permeable membrane against its concentration gradient i.e. from low solvent concentration to high solvent concentration in the presence of externally applied pressure on the solution
