what are the physical factors that may affect the distribution of organisms?
-temperature, -avaliability of nutrients, -amount of light, -availability of water, - availability of oxygen, -availability of carbon dioxide.
1 of 8
what is an example of temperature affecting the distribution of organisms?
arctic plants are small which limits the number of plants eaters which can survive there
2 of 8
what is an example of avaliability of nutrients affecting the distribution of organisms?
most plants struggle to grow when mineral ions are in short supply and therefore few animals will survive in that area.,
3 of 8
what is an example of amount of light affecting the distribution of organisms?
few plants live on a forest floor because of the light is blcked out by the trees. shaded plants often have a broader leaves or more chlorophyll.
4 of 8
what is an example of avaliability of water affecting the distribution of organisms?
water is important for all organisms so few will live in deserts. if it rains in the desert then plants grow, produce flowers and seeds very quickly. then there will be food for animals.
5 of 8
what is an example of avaliability of oxygen affecting the distribution of organisms?
water animals can be affected by lack of oxygen. some inverttebrates can live at very low oxygen levels but most fish need high levels of oxygen dissolved in water.
6 of 8
what is an example of avaliability of carbon dioxide affecting the distribution of organisms?
lack of carbon dioxide will affect the plant growth and therefore lower the food avaliable for animals.
7 of 8
how can quantitive data be obtained on the distribution of organisms?
radoming sampling with quadrats and sampling along a transect.
