What is a homologous series?
Series of compounds where: The compounds all have the same general formula. Consecutive members of the series differ by CH2. Length of the chain has little effect on the chemical reactivity of the functional group. Affects physical properties.
1 of 15
Molecular Formula
Shows the actual number of atoms of each element in the molecule.
2 of 15
Displayed Formula
A drawn out representation of the molecule showing every bond and every element in the molecule.
3 of 15
Structural Formula
Shows the arrangement of the atoms in a molecule without showing the bonds.
4 of 15
Empirical Formula
Simplest whole ratio of atoms in a compound.
5 of 15
Functional group
It is the reactive part of the molecule. It is part of the molecule that does not contain hydrogen or carbon like oxygen or the halogens. Usually represented by a suffix like -ate, -ane, -ene, -oic (ethanoic acid).
