Testing for Alkenes
Bromine water- if it contains a double bond it will decolourise
1 of 6
Testing for Haloalkanes
fluoroalkane- no precipitate forms
chloroalkane- white
bromoalkane- pale cream
iodoalkane-pale yellow
2 of 6
Testing for Phenols (acidic nature)
Sodium hydroxide (strong base will react with any acid)
3 of 6
Testing for Carboxylic acid
reacts with carbonates to form a salt, carbon dioxide and water
4 of 6
Testing for Aldehydes and Ketones
you need to use the reagent 2,4 dinitropheylhydrazine
1cm3 of sulfuric acid, 2cm3 of water and 5cm3 of methanol- will react with the carbonyl group and a bright orange precipitate will form
5 of 6
Aldehydes only
To make the light brown precipitate- 2cm3 of silver nitrate solution and 0.8 mol sodium hydroxide
add drops of dilute ammonia until the brown precipitate dissolves quickly
