Define Application Software
Programs that are used to accomplish speicifc tasks for a user BUT are not related to management and maintenance of computer itself. EG Word processors, Spreadhseets.

Define Multi-Tasking
An OS which alows the user to run several programs at once. Cleverly manages memory and processor time to give impression they are all running together.

Define Single User
An OS that allows for one user at a time.

Define Multi-User
An OS that allows for a different login accounts and more than one user at a time, eg College Mainframe.

Define Distributed OS
An OS that co-ordinates many computers giving user the impressin they are a single system. A large network of systems, like in companies and schools.

Define Embedded OS
An OS embdedded into simple devices lke phones, washing machines. They usually use Low-power RISC chips with limite facilities. Designed to be ceap and respond to sensor Inputs and User Selections.

Real-Time OS
An OS which gives a reponse within a GUARANTEED AMOUNT of time. Eg Aircraft guidance systems, self driving cars. SAFETY CRITICAL applications.
