On the move

As I have said for all of my flash cards for Edexcel geography, unit 1: global challenges and topic 2: going global:

 *  Don't use this as your sole revision source.

 *  Don't copy these; you can use them by all means but don't say you made them.

  * They are made to be quick reminders not intense revision.

Good luck for your exam!

On the 1st January 2004, the A8 (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Estonia, Lithuiania and Latvia) joined the EU. The government expected 200,000 to 400,000 immigrants but in fact 800,000 arrived.
4 of 15
Why are they pulled to the UK?
The UK's reputation is seen as tolerant. The developed economy is seen as a magnet. The exchange rate; more value for their money. Job vacancies.
5 of 15
COSTS to the SOURCE (A8, e.g. Poland).
-Loss of workforce (7% in Poland and 10% in Lithuania) and ageing and falling migration (e.g. Poland's decline from 38 million to an estimated 33 million in 2050).
6 of 15
BENEFITS to the SOURCE (A8, e.g. Poland).
Higher wages (they are paid approximately £6 but this is lower than the UK's average of £10) and remittances can be sent home (€6.4 billion in 2006 which is 2.5 % of Polish's GDP).
7 of 15
COSTS to the HOST (UK).
Population change (in 2015, the UK population is estimated to be 65 million and 20% of babies will be born from migrants) and a pressure on spacing and housing; could be a pressure to build on greenfield sites.
8 of 15

9 of 15
Retirement flows
750,000 live in Spain and 200,000 in France permanently.
10 of 15
BENEFITS to the HOST (Mediterranean, e.g. Spain).
Spain's fertility rate is low and so they encourage migration. 65% of all migrants are aged between 16 and 44. Areas which where largely unproductive are now valuable due to villa development. Positive multiplier effect.
11 of 15
COSTS to the HOST(Mediterranean, e.g. Spain).
House prices exceed the buying power of local people. Emigrant ghettos (ethnic enclaves) are created with little social and economic integration. Large scale villa development have ruined the coastal landscape and degraded biodiversity.
12 of 15
BENEFITS to the SOURCE (UK).
Emigration balances immigration; reducing net migration rates. Relieves pressure for homes to be built on greenfield sites. Less strain on healthcare for over 85s.
13 of 15
COSTS to the SOURCE (UK).
Family breakup. Loss of a highly experienced workforce and grey pound is spent overseas.
14 of 15
Immigration policies
There are five tiers of migrants. 21,700 migrants are allowed in from outside the EU. You are more likely to enter if you are from the European Economic Area or Switzerland.
