narrative perspective
the poem carries two voices of presumably wife and husband in which the tone of emergency plays on the stereo typical trembling women, and the voice of the husband who slowly starts to become detatched from the poem.

repetition of similair syllables makes it sound like a heart beat in witch the urgency is echoed.

male figure speaks in parataxis which juxtaposes the wife who speaks for longer to heighten the sense of urgency however their speeches are together and so we knowthey are related in some way

the poem is set in rural england but also seems to be in the importane of a military background this may be seen to the use of scarlet soldiers as referring to scottish soldiers or might be a bloody soldier either way it creates mystery and suspense.

its a poem written in a ballad form with the use of enjambment it allows auden to be an effective story teller and also ther is use of the regular quatrain pattern in which auden may be suggesting for many women during the war this was a regular day

not only makes the sound of a heart beat louder but the soldiers footsteps this is proleptic as the tone itself tells us that there is foreshadowing danger.
