What are official statistics?

Numerical data collected by the government or state agencies such as the Department of Health.

It is important because it demonstrates the inequalities in health services to different groups of people.

What are some advantages of official statistics?

Easy to access - often available on the internet and therefore requires little work from researcher. Often very contemporary - occurring at that time/up to date and usually involves large representative samples - findings can therefore be generalized.

What are some disadvantages of official statistics?

Official statistics are open to political abuse as they can me manipulated by the government to portray a certain message. They also don't represent the full picture e.g., crime statistics lack validity because of underreporting.
