Question four? The watersnake shows the cycle that the story has taken and also represents determinism. It's not unexpected, the point of OMAM is that each life has been planned out and there's no way of changing things. Steinbeck was obsessed with the idea of determinism.

I think the lonely question is a bit loose, every single character in the novel is lonely in some way. Also the water snake represents the inevitability of life and the idea that 'the strongest survives'  Apart from that a great test of knowledge thanks. :)
