Chemistry OCR 1.2.3 Sub-shells and Energy levels

?
Define a sub-shell
a group of the same type of atomic orbitals (s,p,d or f) within a shell
1 of 10
As the principal quantum number (energy level) increases, what is gained in each shell?
a new type of sub-shell. i.e. n=1 1s, n=2 2s, 2p, n=3 3s, 3p, 3d
2 of 10
Do sub-shells within a shell have different energy levels?
Yes
3 of 10
What is the order of the energy levels within shells af an atom?
1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4S, 3D, 4p, 4d, 4f
4 of 10
Define electon configuration
the arrangement of electrons in an atom
5 of 10
What is the German Aufbau Principle?
a set of rules that demonstrates the way in which electrons must fill sEhells.
6 of 10
Explain how electrons in the shells of an atom are arranged
Electrons are added one at a time to 'build up' the atom. The lowest available energy level is filled first (1s) and each energy level must be filled before the next higher energy starts to fill.
7 of 10
What MUST you remember when filling orbitals within sub-shells?
When a sub-shell is built up with electrons, each orbital is SINGLY filled BEFORE pairing starts. An orbital can hold a maximum of 2 electrons with opposite spins.
8 of 10
What would the electronic configuration of Oxygen be?
(^ represents a subscript) 1s^2 2s^2 2p^4
9 of 10
What would the electronic configuration of Iron be?
1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 4S^2 3d^6
