Qualitative
A variable that cannot take a numerical value i.e hair colour
1 of 28
Quantitative
A variable that can take a numerical value
2 of 28
Continuous
A quantitative variable that can take any value within a range i.e time
3 of 28
Discrete
A quantitative variable that can only take certain values i.e number of cars
4 of 28
Frequency Density (Equation)
Frequency of the class/Class width
5 of 28
Box-and-Whisker Plot
A visual display of the five number summary. The box-and-whisker plot is a simplified boxplot taught to beginners . It does not show outliers. The whiskers extending all the way to the minimum and maximum values regardless of how far out they may be
6 of 28
Outlier
A value that is distinctly separate from the majority of the values
7 of 28
Median
The middle value in a ranked set of data
8 of 28
Mean
The sum of the values in the data divided by the number of values
9 of 28
Mode
The value in a set of data with the highest frequency
10 of 28
Modal Class
The class with the highest frequency density (in grouped frequency tables)
11 of 28
Range
Largest value - smallest value
12 of 28
Interquartile Range
Upper quartile - Lower quartile
13 of 28
Variance
The average of the squared differences from the mean
14 of 28
Standard Deviation
A measure of how spread out a set of values is from the mean
15 of 28
Sample Space
A set of all possible outcomes in an experiment (written in "{ }")
16 of 28
Outcome
A single, specific possible result of an experiment
17 of 28
Event
A set of possible outcomes resulting from a particular experiment
18 of 28
Mutually Exclusive
Events that cannot happen at the same time
19 of 28
Addition Law of Propability
A method for finding the probability that either or both of two events occurs.
20 of 28
Multiplication Law of Probability
A method for finding the probability that both of two events occur.
21 of 28
Independent Events
Events for which the probability of any one event occurring is unaffected by the occurrence or non-occurrence of any of the other events
22 of 28
Conditional Probability
A probability that is computed based on the assumption that some event has already occurred. The probability of event B given that event A has occurred is written P(B|A)
23 of 28
Combination
A selection of objects from a collection. Order is irrelevant
24 of 28
Permutation
A selection of objects in which the order of the objects matters
25 of 28
Factorial
The product of a given integer and all smaller positive integers
26 of 28
Random Variable
A quantity whose value depends on chance
27 of 28
Least Squares
The linear fit that matches the pattern of a set of paired data as closely as possible. Out of all possible linear fits, the least-squares regression line is the one that has the smallest possible value for the sum of the squares of the residuals
