Causes of the German revolution?
Sailors worried about a suicide attack to restore honour - realised the war was lost - national shock at news of Germany's military defeat - Anger over difficult conditions - October reforms failed to impress

Sailors refused to obey orders. Government lost control. Mutiny spread across ports all over Germany. Turned into a revolutionary movement.

Workers' and soldiers' councils set up, supported by left wing working class - Kaiser went into exile in the Netherlands

What was the Ebert-Groener agreement?
An agreement that the army would help support the government, keeping it stable, and in return, the government would help put down revolutionary socialism and keep the authority of army officers

What was the Stinnes-Legien agreement?
An agreement that trade unions wouldn't interfere with privately owned businesses, in return workers could create committees and only work an 8 hour day.

When was the Spartacist revolt?
January 1919

What happened during the Spartacist revolt?
Launched an armed rising in Berlin, trying to overthrow the government to create a soviet republic.

Was it successful?
No, it was easily defeated, with 100 people killed and little chance of success in the first place. The leaders were then murdered in police custody.
