Periodicity
A repeating pattern in properties of elements across periods of the periodic table
1 of 12
First ionisation energy
The energy required to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms of an elements to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions
2 of 12
Metallic bonding
The strong electrostatic attraction between cations and delocalised electrons
3 of 12
Disproportionation
A reaction in which the same element is simultaneously oxidised and reduced, giving two different products
4 of 12
Enthalpy change of reaction
The enthalpy change that accompanies a reaction in the molar quantities shown in a chemical equation under standard conditions with all reactants and products in their standard states
5 of 12
Enthalpy change of formation
The enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements under standard conditions, with all reactants and products in their standard states
6 of 12
Enthalpy change of combustion
The enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of a substance reacts completely with oxygen under standard conditions with all reactants and products in their standard states
7 of 12
Enthalpy change of neutralisation
The enthalpy change that accompanies the reaction of an acid by a base to form one mole of water, under standard conditions with all reactants and products in their standard states
8 of 12
Activation energy
The minimum energy required to start a reaction by the breaking of bonds
9 of 12
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being used up in the process; a catalyst provides an alternative route for the reaction and lowers the activation energy
10 of 12
Homongenous catalysis
A reaction in which the catalyst and reactants are in the same physical state; frequently the aqueous or gaseous state
11 of 12
Heterogenous catalysis
A reaction in which the catalyst has a different physical state from the reactants; frequently reactants are gases whilst the catalyst is a solid
