OCR C2 Revision Flashcards: Amy and Lacey - The Structure of the Earth

HideShow resource information
What is the Lithosphere?
The lithosphere is the relatively cold and rigid layer of the Earth which consists of the Crust and the top part of the Mantle.
1 of 11
What is the lithosphere made of?
Tectonic Plates which are less dense than the mantle below.
2 of 11
How do we get most of our information about the Earth? (The crust is too thick to drill through)
Seismic waves made from man made explosions or earthquakes.
3 of 11
What is the structure of the Earth from the outside to the inside?
Crust, (Lithosphere), Mantle, Outer core, Core
4 of 11
What happens to the temperature of the Mantle as the depth increases?
It rises with depth because the core transfers energy.
5 of 11
What slowly moves plates?
Convection currents
6 of 11
What happens when oceanic and continental plates collide?
The denser oceanic pate sinks, pulling more of the plate down and partly melting as it reaches the hotter part of the mantle. This is SUBDUCTION
7 of 11
What doesthe theory of plate tectonics suggest?
Africa and South America could have once been one land mass.
8 of 11
Most scientists now accept Wegener's theory. Why?
It has a wide range of evidence and it has been discussed and tested by many scientists.
9 of 11
What causes volcanoes?
Rising Magma. Magma has different types of composition which cause different types of eruption.
10 of 11
Geologists study volcanoes to try to predict future eruptions. True or false: These predictions are 100% accurate.
False - they are never completely certain
