OCR Biology Definitions

?
Ecosystem
All of the living and non-living organisms of a habitat and their interactions.
1 of 11
Abiotic Factors
Non-living factors (oxygen, light intensity, precipitation).
2 of 11
Biotic Factors
Living factors (diseases, predators).
3 of 11
Producer
Organisms that produce complex organic compounds from simple sources by photosynthesis or chemosynthesis (e.g autotrophic plants).
4 of 11
Consumer
Organisma that must synthesise organic compounds from inorganic sources or other animals (e.g hetrotrophic/omnivore animals).
5 of 11
Decomposer
Organisms that feed on dead organic matter releasing molecules, minerals and energy.
6 of 11
Named Decomposers
Nitosomonas, Nitrobacter, Rhizobium (all recycle nitrogen).
7 of 11
Biomass
The energy passed through a food chain.
8 of 11
Primary Sucession
Primary succession is one of two types of biological and ecological succession of plant life, occurring in an environment in which new substrate devoid of vegetation and other organisms usually lacking soil (lava flow) is deposited.
9 of 11
Climax Community
An ecological community in the final stage of succession, in which the species composition remains relatively stable until a disturbance such as fire occurs.
10 of 11
Secondary Sucession
Secondary succession is the series of community changes which take place on a previously colonized, but disturbed or damaged habitat. Examples include areas which have been cleared of existing vegetation (such as after tree-felling in a woodland).
