OCR B2 Revision Flashcards : Recycling - Amy and Lacey

?
Why is carbon recyled?
So that it can be available to other living organisms.
1 of 10
What is the process that removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere?
Photosynthesis
2 of 10
How is carbon passed along a foodchain or web?
Feeding
3 of 10
How is carbon dioxide released into the air?
Plants and animals respiring, soil bacteria and fungi acting as decomposers ad the burning of fossil fuels.
4 of 10
Carbon dioxide is also absorbed by oceans. What happens next?
Marine organisms make shells made of carbonate which then become limestone. Then carbon in limestone is returned to the atmosphere through volcanic eruptions and weathering.
5 of 10
True or false: plants can take in nitrogen straight from the atmosphere.
False: it must be converted into nitrates.
6 of 10
What are nitrates used for?
Plant growth
7 of 10
What organisms break down nitrogen compounds in dead plants and animals?
Decomposers
8 of 10
Name the microorganisms involved and their role.
DECOMPOSERS eg bacteria and fungi convert proteins and urea into ammonia. NITRIFYING BACTERIA convert ammonia to nitrates. DENITRIFYING BACTERIA convert nitrates into nitrogen gas. NITROGEN-FIXING BACTERIA in root nodules or soil fix nitrogen gas.
9 of 10
What is one other way that nitrogen gas is fixed?
By lightning strikes.
