What does a eukaryotic cell contain?
a nucleus, cytoplasm, a partially permeable membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes
1 of 15
What are two examples of eukaryotic cells?
plant cells and animal cells
2 of 15
What extra things does a plant cell contain that an animal cell doesn't?
a cell wall, large vacuole and chloroplasts
3 of 15
What does a prokaryotic cell contain?
no nucleus, one chromosome, plasmids, cell membrane, cell wall and ribosomes
4 of 15
What do microscopes do?
magnify images and allow things to be seen in more detail
5 of 15
What are the different parts of a light microscope?
an eyepiece, high and low power objective lenses, a clip, a stage, a slide, a lamp or a mirror, a fine adjustment knob and a coarse adjustment knob
6 of 15
What are the two different types of microscopes?
light microscope and electron microscope
7 of 15
What are the differences between the two types of microscopes?
light microscopes are used to study living cells and for regular use when relatively low magnification and resolution is enough. Electron microscopes provide higher magnifications and higher resolution images but cannot be used to view living cells
8 of 15
What is a chromosome?
really long molecules of DNA
9 of 15
What is a genome?
the entire genetic material of an organism
10 of 15
What is the structure of DNA?
double helix
11 of 15
Where is genetic material stored in animal and plant cells?
the nucleus and arranged into chromosomes
12 of 15
How many pairs of chromosomes do humans have?
23 pairs (46 chromosomes in total)
13 of 15
What is a chromosome?
one very long molecule of DNA that's coiled up
14 of 15
What is DNA?
a molecule that is made up of nucleotides
