Atypical Behaviour
An anxiety disorder whihc begins as a young adult, and consists of two compents : obessive and persistent thoughts, compulisvge and repetitive behaviours.
1 of 19
Self- Soothing
Reinforces the feeling of anxiety from the stimulus.
2 of 19
Emotional Characteristics
Both elemtns cause ditress and anxiety, the sufferes are aware the behaviours are excessive and are ashamed/ embarassed of them.
3 of 19
Cognitive Characteristics
The obessions is recurrent and intrusive thoughts/ impulses occur, they can however be inappropraite or forbidden and may also be frightening and/or embarassing. They are uncontrollable.
4 of 19
Behavioural Characteristics
The compulsive behaviour often reduces the anxiety and are reptitive and unconcealed. But must be completed whislt they are excessive.

Biological Theories of Atypical Behaviour
Things go worng with thinking, emotion and behaviour due to biological abnormalities such as gentics and faulty neurotransmitters.
6 of 19
Neurotransmitters
Cells in the brain and CNS which send chemical and electrical messages to each other.
7 of 19
Seratonin
A neurtransmitter which regulates cyclic body processes, constricts smooth muscle, contrubutes to wellbeing and happiness but also transmits impulses between nerve cells.
8 of 19
The COMT Gene
Regulates the production of Dopamine.
9 of 19
The SERT (5-HTT) Gene
A Seratonin transport gene.
10 of 19
Ozakia Et Al (2003)
Studies 2 unrelated families both had a mutated SERT gene. 6/7 people had OCD.
11 of 19
Pigotl Et Al (1998)
Found drugs which increase seratonin levels reduce the symptoms of OCD. Such as SSRI's used for treating depression.
12 of 19
Treatment 1
SSRI's such as Prozac (antidepressants) which stp seratonin being reabrobed after release at the synaptic gap, these reduce anxiety and OCD worry cycle.
13 of 19
Treatment 2
Trycyclics such as Clomipramine wich stop both seratonin and noadrenaline being reabsorbed at the synaptic gap, these also reudce anxiety by smoothing nerve impulse transition but they have lots of side effects.

Treatment 3
Benzodiazepines such as Diazepam which slow CNS activity and enhance GABA neurotransmitters which depressw neural activity. However receptors become blcoked and chloride ions are released.

Neural Explanation of OCD
The caudate nucleaus supress signals from the orbifrontal cortex (0FC), this is deisgned to send signals to the thalamus about anything. If dmaged the caudate doesntl regultate the OFC which can cause impaired decison making.

Obrmer (1998)
IDentified seratonin as a key neurotransmitter.
17 of 19
Sekel (2007)
Found that high dopamine levels cause overactivity.

Diathesis Stress Model
Explains individual differences in responce to the same stress such as vulnerability. About how much of a risk factor you have already and how much life adds onto that.
