They act as an explanation as to why an individual remains in the agentic state

What is legitimacy of authority?
An explanation for obedience which suggests that we are more liekly to obey people who we percieve to have (justified) authority over us

Some people are granted the power to punish others

What research support is there for legitimacy of authority?
Psychologists showed students a film of Milgram's study and asked them to identify the person responsible. They blamed the 'experimenter' not the ppt.

Why is the agentic shift a limited explanation?
It doesn't explain many of the research findings such as why some ppts. didn't obey or Hofling's nurse study

Give a strength of legitimacy of authority:
Its a useful account of cultural differences in obedience. Findings in Australia showed 16% obedience to the highest voltage. Findings in Germany however showed 85% obedience rate to highest voltage
