What is thermogenesis?
The thermic effect of food. A process in which the body burns calories to utilise the foods you have just eaten, converting those calories to heat.

Source of energy, helps build insulating layer in the adipose layer.

What is PAL?
Physical activity level. Calculated by taking a person's total energy use over a 24 hour period divided by his or her basal metabolic rate.

What are the effects of excess fat?
Obesity/increase in weight, increased blood pressure/cholesterol, stored in adipose layer which is under your skin and around your internal organs (visceral fat).

What are the risk factors associated with obesity?
High blood pressure, increased risk of- type 2 diabetes, strokes, heart disease (and other CVDs and CHDs), arthritis, tenuous links to cancer (e.g. breast cancer)

Give 3 sources of fats and oils?
Fats (solid at room temp)- margarine, butter, lard, suet. Oils (liquid at room temp)- olive, sunflower, rapeseed, coconut, palm, walnut.
