Test for starch
1. Add a few drops of iodine solution to the food solution.
2. If the solution turns a dark blue-black color, the food contains starch.

Test for lipids (solid)
1. Rub some of the food onto a piece of filter paper.

2. Hold the paper up to the light. If the paper has gone translucent, the food contains lipids.

Test for lipids (in solution)
1. Add a few drops of ethanol.
2. Shake the tube and leave for 1 minute. – the oil will be at the bottom and ethanol on the top.
3. Pour the ethanol into a test tube of water.
4. If the solution turns cloudy, the food contains lipids.

Test for protein
1. Add a few drops of the Biuret reagent (copper sulfate and sodium hydroxide solution) to the food solution.

2. If the solution turns purple, the food contains protein.

Test for sugar
1. Add a few drops of Benedict’s solution to the food solution.

2. Heat the mixture in a water bath or with a bunsen burner.

3. Solution will change color if sugar is present.
