What does imitation mean?
Copying the behaviour of people around us who we like or admire.

What does Reinforcement mean?
When we remember the effect of praise or reward we are more likely to do the behaviour again and make it a habit

What does punishment mean?
When we remember the effect of some sense of criticism or disapproval, or even harm. If this is very negative it can stop us doing a behaviour for good

What does Role models mean?
The people who are seen or watched and listened to, these are often influential adults , such as parents or celebrities.

A02 Criticisms. The social learning theory struggles to explain why certain examples of NVC may persist even when punished.
If a child gets told off for sticking his tongue out this doesn't necessarily mean that they won't do it again.

The social learning theory suggests that people can learn new ways of communicating non verbally but this is not always true.
For example, efforts to teach offenders new appropriate body language tend to not work that well. If NVC was simply a result of learning it should not be so difficult to teach new behaviours.

The SLT cannot really explain why children brought up in the same environment can have quite different ways of communicating non verbally.
For example, two brothers brought up by the same parents, in the same community, with the same influences can have very different ways of expressing themselves.

Alternative theory - Evolutionary theory - What does the ET believe in?
Nature over nurture. We are born with certain NVC in order to help us survive and reproduce so we can pass on our genes. Examples of this would be waving hands to ward off potential enemies to survive.
