What is the main idea of the Social Learning Theory?
We observe and imitate behaviours of our role models and observe how they react to praise or consequence, Non-verbal communication is learnt not instinctive.
11 of 27
What is the role of reinforcement in the Social Learning Theory?
When we imitate someone, if the behaviour is rewarded we are more likely to repeat it, however if we suffer consequences we are less likely to repeat the behaviour.

How is the Social Learning Theory supported in real life?
It is supported by cultural variations, more specifically how we greet eachother. In France friends kiss eachother twice on the cheks, however in Japan they bow to eachother, If NVC is instinctive then why do we communicate differently?
13 of 27
What is criticism one of the Social Learning Theory?
The theory suggests new NVC can be learnt however attempts with criminals haven't worked well, if this was true teaching them more appropriate body langauge would be easy.
14 of 27
What is criticism two of the Social Learning Theory?
It cannot explain why two people brought up in the same environment may communicate differently, for example two brothers, one may be outgoing and the other may be anti-social.
15 of 27
What is criticism three of the Social Learning Theory?
The theory ignores the effect of Nature, there are some gestures that are universal for example smiling to show pleasure.

What is the Evolutionary Theory?
This theory suggests that we are governed by instinct as we want to survive and live long enough to pass on our genes. (ins. evolved passing on genes) This takes back to when we didn't have the capacity to communicate with words..

What is the aim of Yuki et al.'s study?
To see whether there are cultural differences in how we recognise emotions using the eyes and mouth as cues.
20 of 27
What is the procedure of Yuki et al.'s study?
This was a cross cultural study with 118 American students and 95 Japanese students. They were given a questionnaire and rted a series of six emoticons from 1-9 on how happy they seemed. The emoticons had combinations of happy/sad eyes/mouths.
21 of 27
What are the findings of Yuki et al.'s study?
The Japanese gave higher ratings to those with happy eyes and vice versa for the Americans. This supports the idea of cultural differences as to how emotions are expressed and interpreted, it is affected by upbringing and culture.
22 of 27
What is criticism one of Yuki et al.'s study?
The research lacked ecological validity as they used emoticons not real faces, it's not applicable to real life.
23 of 27
What is criticism two of Yuki et al.'s study?
The study isn't representative as they only studied students, younger or older people may interpret faces differently.
24 of 27
What is criticism three of Yuki et al.'s study?
The Dependant Variable was measured too simply, recognising emotions is a complex process and can't just be measured on a scale as it's not reliable.

How can Non-Verbal Communication Research be applied to real life?
Social Skills Training is based on the premise that NVC is learnt, for example we can work with offenders to teach them new ways of communicating to help them manage difficult situations better in the future.

What are the four steps of Social Skills Training?
Modelling, Imitating, Feedback and Homework.
