Non-Linear Motion

?
What is friction?
a force that opposes motion
1 of 14
What is contact friction?
between solid surfaces
2 of 14
What is fluid friction?
drag
3 of 14
What is a fluid?
a gas or liquid
4 of 14
Describe the friction experienced in fluids
force of drag depends on the viscosity of fluids, it will increase as speed increases // also depends on shape of object (surface area)
5 of 14
What factors affect the magnitude of a drag force?
velocity of object // shape (SA) of object // density or viscosity of fluid // dynamics of object
6 of 14
What is weight?
the gravitational force acting upon an object
7 of 14
Describe the motion of a body falling in an uniform gravitational field
initially accelerates // object will experience air resistance known as drag // drag depends on SA, bigger objects experience more force, friction increases as speed increases// eventually air resistance will equal weight - terminal velocity
8 of 14
Describe the motion of a body falling with a parachute
will accelerate til terminal velocity // before reaches ground parachute opens to decrease velocity, SA of chute will increase drag, slows them down and they reach a new smaller terminal velocity
9 of 14
What is terminal velocity?
constant velocity of an object travelling through a fluid, net force is 0 // drag is equal to weight
10 of 14
How does the mass of an object impact upon it's terminal velocity?
as weight = m x g, with a larger mass the weight will also be larger, this will cause the time taken to reach TV to be longer
11 of 14
What will reaching terminal velocity look like on a displacement-time graph?
curved, then becomes straight
12 of 14
What will reaching terminal velocity look like on a velocity-time graph?
increase then level off
13 of 14
What will reaching terminal velocity look like on an acceleration-time graph?
level, then decrease to 0 as no acceleration when velocity is constant
