Explain the process of nitrogen fixation
Nitrogen in the atmosphere is reduced to ammonia by bacteria called rhizobium. Rhizobium is found in the root nodules of leguminous plants. They have a mutualistic relationship with the plants, they supply nitrogen and the plant gives carbohydrates.

What is ammonification?
Nitrogen compounds from dead organisms are turned into ammonium compounds by decomposers (saprobiotic bacteria). Animal waste also contains nitrogen compounds which can be converted into ammonium.

what is Nitrification?
Ammonium compounds in the soil are changed into nitrogen compounds that can be used by plants. Nitrifying bacteria change ammonium into nitrites. Nitrobacter change nitrites to nitrates.

Explain denitrification
Nitrates in the soil are converted into nitrogen gas by denitrifying bacteria. They se nitrates in the soil to respire and produce the gas. This occurs in anaerobic conditions (water logged soil).
