What must daughter cells produced be able to do?
Carry out the same functions as the parent cell.
1 of 12
Describe chromosomes
Chromosomes are in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. Contain molecules of DNA which contain genes. Hold instructions for making new cells.
2 of 12
Describe DNA and histone proteins.
The DNA that makes up each chromosome are wrapped around histone proteins. DNA and histone proteins together are called chromatin.
3 of 12
What are the replicas produced from the parent cell called?
A pair of sister chromatids.
4 of 12
What happens when sister chromatids are separated from each other?
Each will end up as a new daughter cell.
5 of 12
What must happen before a cell can divide to produce 2 daughter cells?
The DNA must be replicated. 2 replicas are produced. Each one is an exact copy of the original. They remain held together at the centromere.
6 of 12
What happens before the sister chromatids separate?
Chromatin condenses and forms visible chromosomes. They can take up stains and be viewed under a light microscope.
7 of 12
What happens if the genes are not copied precisely?
The resulting mutations may mean the new cells fail to function.
8 of 12
What are the factors affecting the speed of the cycle?
The species, cell type and availability of nutrients.
9 of 12
What are the stages the cell cycle is divided into?
Interphase which includes the S phase and growth phase, mitosis and cytokinesis.
10 of 12
Describe the S phase and growth phase of interphase
In the S phase the DNA replicates. In the growth phase, proteins, organelles and other components are made.
11 of 12
What happens in mitosis?
The nucleus divides and chromatids separate.
