Kathy: Ruth's natural successor. Ruth asks Kathy to get Tommy back for her. He's upset about Miss Lucy revoking her creativity. Creativity is referred to as being "evidence". Miss Lucy has left the school. Gets back with Ruth.

Essay, vague deadline. Cottages described. "Stables converted.". Kathy notices imitations of TV characters, especially Ruth. Ruth spoils Kathy's book. Kathy brings up elbow slapping. Ruth accuses Kathy of getting /well acquainted/ with some veterans.

Late night chats. Unspoken rule mentioned. Kathy sees "some of the veterans" comment as betrayal of this unspoken code. Kathy sexual urges. (Ruth tells her they're a bit weird) Ruth gave items to charity shop. **** magazines.

Norfolk trip. Dream about how it'd be good to work in a shop. Deferrals brought up by Rodney. Disagreement over whether they knew about this.

Ruth tries to explain Tommy's ignorance by saying that he wasn't "a real Hailsham student" because he was always teased and left out. After this jab, Kathy looks at Tommy's face, and she sees the old Tantrum Tommy creeping back for a moment.

Search for office with the possible. Everyone except Ruth thinks Ruth is similar to her possible. Follow the possible to art gallery. They realise they should "look in the gutter" if they're looking for possibles. The group splits up.

We learn Tommy had tried to find the tape, but hadn't been successful. They find the tape. Talk about the deferrals. RE: Tokens, Miss Emily has said artwork is so important because it reveals your soul.

Tommy's deferral theory, and how art shows your soul. Tommy shares with Kathy that he'd been working on animals lately. Being cloned from riffraff, Kathy's **** habits make sense (and where her sexual desires come from)

Return from Norfolk. No one talks about the trip. Tommy shows Kathy his drawings. Kathy keeps getting annoyed at Ruth for pretending she doesn't remember bits of Hailsham. Kathy's relationship with Lenny is revealed.

Ruth is very supportive after Lenny leaves. Ruth talks about Tommy's drawings. RUTH makes Kathy agree that they aren't good. Kathy bumps into Tommy and Ruth arguing, and Ruth is jealous. She brings up that Kathy laughed.

Ruth says Kathy would never become Tommy's real girlfriend. He could never /like/ her. (Too many guys). This is when Kathy leaves cottages for good to become a carer.
