Neurons
1 of 18
What are the 3 types of neurons
1 Sensory 2 Relay 3 Motor
2 of 18
Summarise Sensory Neurons
Carry nerve impulses from sensory receptors to spinal chord and brain. Convert info from senses to neural impulses. When the impulses reach the brain they are translated into sensations e.g. pain. Not all travels to the brain as some stops at spine
3 of 18
Summarise Relay Neurons
Lies between sensory+motor and allows them to communicate. Located in the brain+spinal chord
4 of 18
Summarise Motor Neurons
Connect CNS to muscles. They form synapses with muscles. When stimulated the motor neurons releases neurotransmitters which leads to muscle movements
5 of 18
The structure of a neuron
The structure of a neuron
6 of 18
What are the 4 parts of a neuron?
1. Cell body 2. Dendrites 3. Axon 4. Myelin Sheath
7 of 18
What is the cell body?
The control centre of the neuron
8 of 18
What are dendrites?
Receive signals from other neurons
9 of 18
What are axons?
They carry impulses away from the cell body down the length of the neuron.
10 of 18
What is the Myelin Sheath?
Protects the axon
11 of 18
Synaptic Transmissions
Synaptic Transmissions
12 of 18
What are synaptic transmissions?
The process by which neighbouring cells communicate with eachother. They do this by sending messages across the synapse
13 of 18
What are the names of the 2 neurons involve in a synaptic neuron?
1. Pre-synaptic 2.Post-Synaptic
14 of 18
Summarise a synaptic transmission
Action potential arrives at pre-synaptic terminal. This stimulates the vesicles which are holding neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters travel across the synapse. Neurotransmitters are picked up by the post synaptic receptors
15 of 18
What determines the likelihood of a neuron firing ?
Summation
16 of 18
Summarise Summation
Neurotransmitters are excitatory or inhibitroy. The likelihood of a neruon firing is is determined by adding up excitatory and inhibitory nuerotransmitters.
17 of 18
Which is positive (excitatory or inhibitory)
excitatory
