Neural Mechanisms in eating satiation

?
Explain Switch on eating
Lateral Hypothalamus activated when there is a decline in glucose levels, which results in a feeling of hunger. Eats food which increases the level of glucose to rise again.
1 of 12
Explain switch off eating
Rise in glucose levels activates the ventromedial Hypothalamus, which leads to satiation. Stop eating leads to decrease in blood glucose levels.
2 of 12
Damage to the Lateral Hypothalamus
Damage to the LH caused a condition called Aphagia (absence of eating).
3 of 12
Stimulation to the Lateral Hypothalamus
Leads to increased eating which is switched on behaviour eating.
4 of 12
Whats the neurotransmitter which turns on eating behaviour?
Neuropeptide Y
5 of 12
What did Wickens find?
Injections of Neuropeptide Y led to feeding behaviour even when satiated
6 of 12
What did stanley find?
Repeated injections of NPY into the hypothalamus of rats produces obesity in just a few days. That satisfaction of food is controlled by the neuropeptide Y.
7 of 12
Damage to the Ventromedial Hypothalamus
leads to overeating which is called hyperphagia.
8 of 12
Stimulation to the Ventromedial Hypothalamus
leads to inhibited feeding which is stop eating.
9 of 12
What negatives did Gold Find?
Damage to the nerve fibres passing through the VMH tends to damage the paraventricular nerve (PVN) and damage to the PVN infact causes Hyperphagia.

who carried out research into Leptin and Obesity?
Zhang
11 of 12
What did Zhang research and find?
some mice recieved two copies of the gene for obesity. These ob/ob mice tend to overeat, with foods high in fat and sugar. He found that ob/ob mice had a defective genes for the protein leptin. Injecting ob/ob mice with leptin causes loss in weight.
