Local Area Network (LAN)
A small network that usually covers only one site and could be linked using physical cables

Wide Area Network (WAN)
Covers the largest geographical area, can be linked via satellite, cables or microwaves.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
The middle one, covers a town or city and can be connected via cable, microwave or satellite.

Hub
A small single network device that allows many computers to communicate,. Hubs aren't very expensive and often found when companies and homes have a wired network.

A type of hardware device that joins networks together at the network protocol layer.

Network Switch
A type of hardware device that joins multiple devices together at the data link network protocol layer.

Internet
A large group of interconnected computers around the world that allows the sending and retrieval of information

World Wide Web (WWW)
a collection of multimedia that is available using the internet.

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
a protocol that manages the assembly and reassembly of data into packets which are transmitted between computers using the internet. It allows for reliable transmission.

Internet Protocol (IP)
A protocol which directs data from one computer to another.
