LAN
(Local Area Networks) They are the networks that you see in most offices and schools. LANs can be as simple as two or three computers linked together for sharing of files or software. They don't have to include a server.

WAN
(Wide Area Network) They are used when the computers that need to be connected together are in different places. They need servers to operate the network, but users connect up to the network from a distance, often using telephone lines.

Bus
In bus networks data is sent to and from the file server along a line of cable. All terminals are connected to this central line.

Star
Star networks are used when a large number of workstations need to be connected to a central computer such as a mainframe or server. Each workstations are connected directly to the central computer.

Ring
Ring networks are a bit like line networks, except that all the equipment is linked in a ring. Data flows around the network in one direction only.
