what does the nervous system allow the body to do?
respond to changes in the environment and coordinate its behaviour
1 of 29
what is a stimulus?
a change in the environment
2 of 29
what do receptors do?
detects the change in the environment
3 of 29
what does a coordinator do?
receives impulses from the receptor and processes the information
4 of 29
what does an effector do?
receives impulses from the coordinator which enables a response
5 of 29
what is a response?
the action performed as a result of the initial stimulus
6 of 29
what are receptors?
groups of specialised cells that detect changes in the environment
7 of 29
where are receptors located?
sense organs
8 of 29
what are receptors in the eye sensitive to?
light
9 of 29
what are receptors in the ear sensitive to?
sound and the position of the head
10 of 29
what are receptors in the tongue sensitive to?
chemicals in food
11 of 29
what are receptors in the nose sensitive to?
chemicals in air
12 of 29
what are receptors in the skin sensitive to?
touch, pain, pressure, temperature
13 of 29
what do light receptor cells have in common with animal cells?
nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane
14 of 29
what happens when a receptor is stimulated?
signals are sent along nerve cells (neurones) to the CNS
15 of 29
what are neurones?
individual nerve cells that are specialised to transmit electrical impulses
16 of 29
what are nerves?
groups of neurones that connect receptors and effectors to the CNS
17 of 29
what does the Central Nervous System consist of?
brain and spinal cord
18 of 29
what is the brain's job?
to process information and coordinate
19 of 29
how could you calculate the time taken for nervous impulses to be transmitted?
by finding the time interval between the stimulus and response
20 of 29
what do sensory neurones do?
carry impulses form the receptor to the CNS
21 of 29
what do relay neurones do?
carry impulses from different parts of the CNS
22 of 29
what do motor neurones do?
carries impulses from the CNS to the effector
23 of 29
what are impulses?
information sent around the CNS
24 of 29
what is the junction between two neurones called?
synapse
25 of 29
what is the name of the chemical diffused across a synapse?
neurotransmitter
26 of 29
if you have caffeine, what effect will this have on the amount of chemicals in the synapse?
increase, making you more alert
27 of 29
if you have alcohol, what effect will this have on the amount of chemicals in the synapse?
decrease, making you less alert
28 of 29
what are types of effectors?
muscles and glands
