The Weimer Republic was unpopular between the years 1919 - 1923 because of their democratic approach to an imperial form of government . They were not liked by the Germans because they were thought to have been 'stabbed in the back´ after they agreed

What was The Treaty Of Versailles?
The Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919 and consisted of 440 Articles setting out the terms for Germany's punishment. The treaty was greeted with shock and disbelief in Germany.

What was Germany's Punishments from the Treaty?
1. The Covenant of the League of Nations - Germany was not allowed to join. 2. Some of their land was taken away. 3.The German army restricted to 100,000 men . 4. They were blamed for war. 5. They had to pay reparations.

Weimar Government Problems...
Germany between 1918 and 1919 was in chaos. People were starving, the Kaiser had fled and people hated the government for signing the armistice in November 1918 - they called them the November criminals.

A French invasion of the Ruhr
In January 1923, the French and Belgian armies sent 60,000 soldiers into the Ruhr region of Germany. The French aimed to extract the unpaid reparations and took control of key industries and natural resources.

Impacts of Hyperinflation:
- Prices of good increased by a huge amount! -Germany's currency became worthless. - savings were lost. -Business people who had loans, no longer needed to pay them back.

The Munich Putsch, November 1923
Hitler tried to take advantage of the crisis facing the Weimar government by instigating a revolution in Munich. It seemed like the perfect opportunity, but poor planning and misjudgment resulted in failure and the subsequent imprisonment of Hitler.

How did the Weimar Republic survive?
Gustav Stresemann and Charles Dawes helped the Weimar Government survive. Stresemann allowed Germany to join The League Of Nations, provided the Germans jobs and used loans from the USA to pay reparations. Dawes arranged the Dawes Plan.

The Dawes Plan:
The Dawes Plan of 1924 was formulated to take Weimar Germany out of hyperinflationand to return Weimar’s economy to some form of stability. It lengthened the time in which reparations had to be paid and got Germany out of hyperinflation.

The wall street crash:
Wall Street Crash meant loans were taken back from Germany by the USA. This lead to... Unemployed men lining up to register for work, Berlin 1929. By 1932 unemployment in Germany reached more than six million. This caused the great depression.
